Sam Harris' Red Haired Woman is an incredible point on Islam. I'm sure, though, that if he were writing this post, he would ask that we apply this to christianity as well.
While the christians might say "oh, that is not 'real' christianity" (whatever the fuck that means), it never escapes me the incredible amount that apologists will do to avoid actually apologizing. It's about reconciling the faith with modern morals to the point where people don't actually see what the books say, they just accept them as the word of god.
The fact is, to say that the bible is the word of god and then to ignore the fact that it condones and even promotes slavery and the killing of heretics is ridiculous.
To call the teachings of Thomas Aquinas and Augustine "saintly" and ignore the fact that they encouraged the mass murder of innocent people because they dissented from the christian opinion is stupid and, as Hitchens puts it, "advertises a willingness to believe absolutely anything."
The believe in god is one point of ignorance, but the believe in religion is a whole different level of gullibility, completely and utterly ignoring the leaps and bounds that culture has made in terms of morality.
